The First Lady of The Republic of Ghana, Her Excellency Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo has fulfilled her pledge of refunding, in full, all the allowances paid to her by the State as First Lady by presenting a cheque to the Chief of Staff in that respect.
According to a letter signed by Shirley Laryea of the Office of the First Lady and addressed to the Chief of Staff, Mrs. Frema Opare, a Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited cheque number 000002 for an amount of GH¢899,097.84 (Eight Hundred and Ninety-Nine Thousand, Ninety-Seven Ghana cedis and Eighty-Four pesewas) being the full refund for monies received from the 7th January 2017 to date as allowances given to Her Excellency the First Lady of the Republic has been presented to her office.
The letter clarified that the cheque is the refunding of the full amount received by Mrs. Akufo-Addo as allowances since her husband because President.
The letter further states that the First Lady has declared that she will not be taking any allowances in that regard in the future. It further assures the populace that Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo remains committed to her role as First Lady and the Championing of the well-being of women and children.
"Her Excellency the First Lady remains committed to her role as First Lady and is devoted to her charity work championing the well-being of women and children in Ghana," the letter read.
It is expected that the second lady Samira Bawumia will follow the gesture and ensure a cheque is also released in her name. The two have decided to reject all the monies recommended to be paid on their behalf as salaries. They have as well decided not to receive any money from the country’s coffers henceforth. The fulfillment of the promise by releasing the cheque is a good example set by the second lady. Pressure is currently on the former first lady, Lordina Mahama to refund her allowances as well.
