Due to our background, perspective, and psychological makeup, we all as humans see things and interpret them from different angles. The diversity and different shades of opinions are what enhances democracy. That we agree to disagree in democracy does not mean we should not give praise where it is due. The New Patriotic Party traces its origin to the first political party formed in Ghana, thus the United Gold Coast Convention. Though the party started the struggle for independence, it was Dr. Kwame Nkrumah's Convention People's Party that gained independence for the country. Nkrumah did not just liberate Ghana from colonization but also attempted to help other sister countries in the sub-region to gain their freedom.
His selfless responsibility in helping have a United Africa is celebrated on the entire continent. Statues of Kwame Nkrumah are found in other African countries like Mali and others. Having such a national hero, and today being a day set aside to celebrate him, it is baffling and shocking that the is no official message from the president of the land to celebrate him. Granted, a party like the New Patriotic Party will always align more to the Danquah-Busia tradition than the Convention People's Party due to the connection that exists between them, that notwithstanding, the moment a party wins power and forms a government, its first allegiance is to the state. In my point of view, the president and the New Patriotic Party erred when they have not officially released a statement to celebrate the man the world sees as the founder of the country.
This is a gesture that must be condemned. The earlier we start celebrating and commending individuals who have played significant roles in society irrespective of their political affiliation the better for our advancements as a nation.
