Chicken is consumed by the majority of Ghanaians hence a threat to poultry is a threat to the food security of the country. Farmers lose a lot of money during an outbreak of the Coccidiosis virus due to the low production of chicken or eggs.
Coccidiosis is a real problem and one of the most significant diseases that give poultry farmers a lot of headaches. It is caused by a protozoan parasite known as Eimeria that attaches itself to a chicken’s intestinal lining. The virus destroys the intestinal tract, staving the host chicken of absorption of nutrients vital to their survival.
All chickens are carriers of various strains of the coccidiosis organism, but not all become infected with the disease. The virus is passed from one chicken to another through infected droppings.

According to Acreage life, If one or two of your chickens were definitively diagnosed with coccidia, treat the remainder of your flock sharing that environment with Amprolium (0.024 percent of the active ingredient in drinking water for three to five days).
Sulfa drugs (like sulfamethazine administered at 0.1 percent for two days) are also effective, but shouldn’t be used in laying hens.
COccidiisis is however prevented by undertaking the following measures;
1.Controlling Moisture in the litter
2.Giving the chickens anticoccidials especially in the first month after a chick is hatched.
3.Providing good biosecurity.
