After owning your car, how to maintain it? In my view, using little money to extend life is the best choice for you. Honestly, maintenance is not as mysterious as it is said to be, just pay attention to a few key points, no need to go to the 4S shop every month, you can do it all by yourself at home. As an experienced driver, I want to share 4 details that you have to notice.

The main function of motor oil is to lubricate the engine, but the oil has its lifespan. On average, the engine oil should be replaced after running for 5,000 kilometers or using it for half a year. However, for semi-synthetic lubricant, it is acceptable to change after 7,500 kilometers and for fully synthetic lubricant, you can replace it once a year or after running for 10,000 kilometers. The oil filter should be replaced together when you change the oil. I want to remind you that if your car only runs two or three kilometers a year, you should fill up fully synthetic oil for your car and change it once a year.

2. Transmission Fluid

Either your car is auto or manual, you need to change your gearbox oil every two years to be effective. For instance, a Japanese car can use it for 60,000 to 80,000 kilometers. Compared with the automatic transmission, the manual one is considered to be more user-friendly because you can change the transmission fluid every 3 years or 80,000 kilometers.

3. Coolant Of The Engine

Antifreeze mainly plays a role in cooling the engine and is generally replaced once every 2 years or 40,000 kilometers. Don’t mix the coolant with anything other than distilled water because the minerals can rust your radiator.

4. Air And Cabin Filters

Other than oil filters, you can DIY your air filter and cabin filter. These two things are normally replaced once every 10,000 kilometers. When you drive the car for five thousand kilometers, you can take out the air pump, and blow them, then it is okay to continue driving. After every 10,000-kilometre drive, do not try to save money by not changing these two filters. If the air filter got dirty, there won't be enough engine air intake, resulting in weak acceleration; if the air conditioning filter is dirty, the air conditioner will not refrigerate and blow out some weird smell.
