On TV3’s Newday, the topic up for discussion was prisoners in Ghana. Recently in the news, inmates in the Central region protested the poor conditions they are experiencing. They also indicated that they are allocated just 1.80p to feed on
This piece of information saddened me and jolted me. How can adults live on a cedi and some coins? This made me run a quick stock of my life and figured what my son takes to school every Monday to Friday. He takes 5gh to school for 5 days: making 25ghc. And our prisoners are getting just 9gh for 5 days.
This is abysmal and doesn’t speak well for a nation that is made to believe it has everything to be successful. The story of prisoners’ living condition in Ghana is very famous. They feed on near to "waste foods" and have no condition to better their life post jail term.
So, our prisoners come out hard. They don’t reform and appear more violent even after they come out. Although some do reform because of the living conditions there, many go worst. Especially those who were not guilty or committed manslaughter offence, like car knocking or reckless driving.
Prisoners deserve good life as well and I think the allocated money is just too infinitesimal to effect any better changes in their lives. We spend money on government convoys and many other unnecessary things. Prisoners are human beings like us who also deserve to be given some major attention and treated as human as they genuinely are.
Although many may think prisoners are bad people and don't deserve any attention or resources, I would advise Ghanaians to visit any of the prison sectors closer to them and know more about the facility and some stories of the inmates. It's just too sad.
