Tenage pregnancy refers to a situation where by a young girl between the ages of 13 and 19 gets pregnant.
Teenage pregnancies really affects the academic process in various schools and mostly the lives of students.
Many victims,however, end up dropping out of school, and this will cause a lot to their lives and make them disappointments to family members and friends as well as society.
In addition to higher rates of postpartum depression, teenage mothers have higher rates of depression. They also have higher rates of suicidal ideation than their peers who aren't mothers. Teen mothers are more likely to experience posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than other teenage women, as well.
In Ghana, adolescents represent 22.4% of the total population. The rates of teenage pregnancies are high. Thirty percent (30%) of all births registered in Ghana in 2014, were by adolescents, and 14% of adolescents aged between 15 and 19 years had begun childbearing
Why teenage pregnancy is a problem
Adolescent pregnancy remains a major contributor to maternal and child mortality. Complications relating to pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of death for girls aged 15-19 globally. Pregnant girls and adolescents also face other health risks and complications due to their immature bodies.
Causes of teenage pregnancies
The factors contributing to teenage pregnancy included: lack of school fees, lack of parental care, communication and supervision, poverty, peer pressure, non-use of contraceptives, desire for a child, forced marriage, low educational level and need for dowries.
Even though measures have been put in place to curb the arise of this pandemic,but the cases grow greater by the day,and also has become a burden to Mother Ghana.
