Covid-19 keeps rising each and everyday. The world is trying to find various ways to keep the infection under control. For now, vaccination, washing of hands thoroughly with soap under running water and wearing of face mask are some of the best ways to protect ourselves from being infected. A lot of health experts have conducted several research purposely to find better ways to deal with the virus. Some of these experts have argued that cloth masks are less protective against the coronavirus, especially the delta variant.
Just last month, the use of cloth face masks were banned by some of the largest European Airlines (names withheld). The reason they gave is that cloth masks do not provide adequate protection for passengers. They therefore recommended the wearing of medical mask from boarding, when on board, and when disembarking the flight.
According to, Dr Joseph Oliver-Commey, an Infectious Disease Specialist at the Ghana Infectious Disease Centre, the cloth masks is efficient, but its efficiency in protecting people against the Coronavirus is reduced when used in crowded areas. He said that all masks were protective against Covid-19 because they formed a barrier to infections when the mucous membranes, nose, and mouth were covered but the cloth masks, were less effective.
The World Health Organization (WHO) on the other hand, advises that people should look out for filtration, breathability, and fit when choosing a fabric mask. They said that the edges of the edges of the mask should be close to the face even when speaking, to prevent air from penetrating through the edges of the mask. The Organization also says masks with vents or exhalation valves are not advised because they allow the unfiltered breath to escape the mask.
According to the WHO, cloth masks should be made of three layers of fabric- the inner layer of absorbent material, such as cotton, the middle layer of non-woven non-absorbent material, such as polypropylene, and an outer layer of non-absorbent material, such as polyester or polyester blend.
Wearing good nose masks go a long way to protect us from airborne diseases especially in crowded places. We should therefore try our best to wear them.
