Rebecca Akufo-Addo vows to refund all allowances paid to her since 2017

The first lady, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo has in a statement pledged to refund all allowances paid to her since her husband took office in 2017.

Mrs. Akufo-Addo said she will refund a total of GHC 899,097.8 paid to her since 2017 as allowances owing to her position as the first lady.

“The First Lady, in consultation with the President of the Republic, has decided to refund all the monies paid to her as allowances from the date of the President’s assumption of office, i.e., from January 2017 to date, amounting to GHS899,097.84,” she said in a statement signed by her office.

Her decision follows fierce criticism following a recommendation by the Professor Yaa Ntiamoa-Baidu committee for the first and second ladies to be paid monthly salaries equivalent to a cabinet minister.

However, the decision has in recent days come under public scrutiny with the majority of Ghanaians rejecting it as unquestionable.

Some argued that they did not vote for the wives of presidents and that there was no basis to pay them monthly salaries.
