The Church Is A Political Institution, Archbishop Palmer Buckle Settles The Dabate

Wednesday, 17th November 2021

The Catholic Bishop for Cape Coast Metropolitan Archdiocese His Grace Charles Gabriel Angela Palmer Buckle has stated that the church is a political institution. He was speaking on Point of View show with Bernard Avle on Citi TV this evening monitored by CitizenOne when he made this bold statement.

Archbishop Charles Palmer Buckle was addressing issues raised by the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference in its 2021 plenary which ended in Wa a couple of days ago.

It is on record that the president of the Bishops Conference His Grace Philip Naameh described during the reading of his key note address that, the President's promise of protecting the public purse had become a mirage.

Many people described the statement as propaganda. Yaw Boaben Asamoah asked the Bishops to come clear with their claims.

Bernard Avle used the opportunity to enquire from Bishop Buckle why the church was mingling itself with police. In his answer, the man of God cleared the air that every institution which deals with people is a political institution including the church.

"Let me clear this. The church is a political institution. Every institution that deals with human beings is a political institution. The church, the school, the hospital, the bank are all political instructions. What the church is guarded against is partisan politics", he told Bernard Avle.

The Bishop explained that since the inception of the GCBC in the early 70s, it has always issued communiqués at the end of every plenary and this touch on sociopolitical issues. He asked Ghanaians to disregard the allegation that the Bishops were doing propaganda.

Bishop Buckle who was a childhood ally to former President Jerry John Rawlings said he suffered many things under the Rawlings regime. He said he and Rawlings disagreed on ideologies yet they remained friends.

In his sermon during the one year anniversary of JJ Rawlings, Palmer Buckle asked Ghanians to leave judgement to God.
