The Ghanaian-Investigative Journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni has today, Monday, 28th June 2021, revealed a meeting which is scheduled to happen today between the President of the land, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and four journalists who have won 'The Journalist Of The Year' award before. This meeting will come off at the Jubilee House, the seat of the country's Presidency at 3:00 pm.
Manasseh Azure Awuni said that his problem is not with the only four journalists who are attending this meeting but information from a reliable source to him indicates that some of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) executives, including the General Secretary, were not even officially informed about this meeting. They got to know of this meeting from one of the Journalists of the Year to whom the above invitation was sent.
Over the years, the government has been accused of interfering in non-governmental, private, and institutions that are supposed to work independently without any interference from politicians. The agenda of this meeting according to Manasseh Azure includes a proposal for the government to pick up a prize( CAR or HOUSE) for Journalist of the Year, a Stimulus package for media, Safety of Journalists, Capacity Enhancement, and Press Centre Redevelopment Project.
Some of the discussion items for the meeting, according to some Ghanaians and Manasseh Azure must not include President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo or politicians. They argued that if the government wants to sponsor GJA's 'Journalists Of The Year' award, they should not make it look like it is the President who is determining who should win that award.
There are a lot of controversies surrounding this 'Journalist Of The Year' award, so discussing whether a car or a house should be given to the winner at the Jubilee House is in the wrong direction. Some Ghanaians and Manasseh also shifted some of the blame to the GJA President, Mr. Affail Monney for surrounding the association with politicians.
Check out reactions from some Ghanaians below:
A Facebook user known as Solomon Nyantakyi reacted that "Why is he still around holding himself as the president when he can hand over to an interim administration just as Obour did at the Musiga?"
Another Facebook user known as Kofi Se Yram also reacted that "No wonder people see journalists as being bias. Why should journalists' awards be a concern for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo?".
