A recommendation by the emoluments committee and approved by the seventh parliament would enable the wife of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo and wife of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to receive salaries henceforth.
This arrangement would enable them officially receive salaries due to their positions, instead of receiving allowances hitherto.Information minister,Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has stated that this approval came from the previous parliament and so it wasn’t a unilateral decision taken by the President. He indicated that, former President Kufuor instituted this during his tenure to primarily enable wives of former Presidents to have some source of livelihood.Nana konadu Agyeman-Rawlings,Faustina Acheampong as well as Fulera Liman, have all been receiving salaries during president Kuffour’s time.
It is worthy to note that, this arrangement is formal and was done legally through the recommendation of the emoluments committee.
The committee which was chaired by Professor Yaa Ntiamoah-Baidu was tasked to make proposals on allowances paid to the wives of the presidents.Other members of the committee included,Chief executive of the Fair wages and salaries commission,Dr Edward Kwapong, former minister of Parliamentary Affairs,Mr Abraham Osei Aidoo,Director-General of Internal Audit Agency,Dr Eric Oduro Osae and a former Managing Director,Donewell Life Insurance Ltd,Mrs Stella Segbawu.
