How to minimize rampant teenage pregnancy in central region of Ghana

When we talk about teenage pregnancy,it is in abundance in the southern part of the country along the coast sides. Now let's all engage in Central Region.

The Central Region of Ghana and the Coastal areas will be used as case studies. In June 2020, the Central region of Ghana recorded 3,198 teenage pregnancy cases which were alarming and most cases were recorded from the coastal areas. A question can be asked “Why in Central Region”

The Central Region of Ghana is rated second in the region with high poverty status and a high level of teenage pregnancy.

It is possible because there is no economic activity in these areas that can create jobs for the teenagers, Teenagers rely solely on the sea and when the year peak season is not favourable, it poses serious hardship on the people.

Teenagers between 11-17 years are victims. Due to poverty and hardship, they then drop out of school to look for a job in towns like Accra to enable them to feed themselves and others, siblings. When the searching gets harder they then rely on boys for as little as GHc5.00 to GHc10.00 to feed themselves and also get some for the numerous siblings. When they realised that that source gives them something small to feed on, it becomes a routine and the boys take advantage to sleep with them. They also agree to that because if they don’t, they will go hungry and can’t even buy the little things needed for themselves

It continues until they get pregnant. The boys sometimes deny being fathers of that baby and it becomes difficult for these little children of those ages to cater for themselves and the babies. Because of immaturity in these girls, they don’t take proper care of the babies. The born babies also passed through the same hardship their parents went through, so they also find themselves in the same situation their mother went through and these contribute to the continued increase in teenage pregnancy in the central region of Ghana.

These routine paths can be curtailed if Citizens, Philanthropist and other sponsors come together to have regular counselling, help these school dropouts to acquire a skill that will be beneficial to them and also support women and teenagers who are interested in trading with seed capitals to start a business on their own.

Some suggested Skill training can be, Soap making, Dressmaking, Pastries, Beads making. And those who due to poverty they dropped out of school but are still interested in the school can be supported with learning materials; school uniforms, and support them with something small for feeding when they get to school.

Some of these children are academically good and have a brighter future. If they get such supports to continue their education they can be of support to their community and their family.
