As the campaign of Jaundice in newborn babies is still ongoing, Dr. Adrianna Naa Morkor Asante who is a healthcare practitioner, specialising as a Paediatrician at Greater Accra hospital. Talking on United television on a program "My Health My life" on a topic "Jaundice In Newborn Babies" held by Dietician Nana Kofi Owusu, a lecture at University Of Health And Allied Science (UHAS) at Volta region Ho.

Dr. Asante explain that, Newborn jaundice occurs when a baby has a high level of bilirubin in the blood. She said, the bilirubin is a yellow substance that the body creates when it replaces old red blood cells and the high level of bilirubin makes a baby's skin and his or her whites eyes look yellowish color and sometimes too, you could see greenish colour as well.

She stated that, It is normal for a baby's bilirubin level to be a bit high after birth, but as the baby is growing in the mother's womb, the placenta removes bilirubin from the baby's body.

Again she said most newborns babies who has yellowing skin (Jaundice) are usually noticeable when the baby is 3 to 4 days old and most of the time this type of jaundice goes away within 2 weeks or less when the early treatment are done.

She added the most causes of jaundice in newborns babies are; 1.Breastfeeding which occurs during the first week of life, it is more likely to occur when babies do not nurse well (breastfeed well). 2. Babies who are born too early (premature) are also more likely to develop jaundice than full-term babies. 3. "ABO" incompatibility, this means when the baby parent blood group are not the same, the baby will likely get jaundice, 3.A sibling affected, 4. Male sex, 5. Sepsis, etc.

Dr. Adrianna said, when parent notice the following symptoms from their babies; 1. Yellow skin, 2. Yellow eyes(sclera), 3. Sleepiness, 4. Brown urine, 4. Fever, 5. Frequent vomiting, 4. high pitch cry ( when your baby always cry with no reason) etc, they should quickly visit hospital for treatment because, this diseases can affect the baby movements or activities when its stay with them for longer period.

She also advice that, this diseases (Jaundice) mostly kill babies when their parent fail to send them to hospital for early treatment, so she advice parents and individual to regularly visit hospital for early treatment and also breastfeed their babies well to avoid losing or risking their babies life. She added the screening is still ongoing so parent can walk in with their babies for check up.

Please should all help like and share this post to create awareness to save our babies from this diseases thank you.
