Malaria And Pregnancy, How To Protect Yourself Against It.

Malaria is an illness transmitted through the bite of a female anopheles mosquito that is infected with the malaria parasite. Everyone is at risk of getting malaria however, pregnant women are especially vulnerable. If malaria is not treated early and effectively in pregnant women, the condition can worsen quickly, and they can die or suffer life-long health problems. In pregnant women, malaria can result in miscarriage, premature delivery or poor development of the unborn child.

Symptoms of malaria.

Headache.

Body aches.

Shivering.

How is malaria cintracted.

-Malaria is contracted by getting bitten by a female anopheles mosquito with the malaria parasite.

-The mosquito that carries the malaria parasite bites mostly at night.

What are the benefits of sleeping under an LLIN?

-Long lasting insecticide treated nets (LLINs) repel and can even kill mosquitoes on contact.

- When a pregnant woman sleep under an LLIN all night long and every night, her chances of being bitten by mosquitoes and getting malaria is reduced .

-LLINs are safe for you and your family. They are not harmful to pregnant women.

How can i protect myself and family from malaria.

-Whether you sleep indoors or outside, sleep under your LLIN throughout the night to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.

-When you are outdoors at night, wear clothing that covers your arms and legs.

-Stagnant water should be removed from around your home where mosquitoes breed. Anopheles mosquitoes like clean water so even stored water in containers and cans around the home should be covered.

-Pregnant women should report early to(ANC) antenatal clinics and take all doses of SULFADOXINE- PYRIMETHAMINE (SP) as directed by the midwife to protect you and your baby from malaria.

-Indoor residual spraying when your fimd mosquitoes in your room and surroundings.

How do i use and care for my LLIN.

-Remove the new LLIN from its package and hang it in the shade for at 48 hours before use. Never hang your LLIN in direct sunlight.

-Hang the net over your bed or sleeping area using string and nails.

-At bedtime, lower the net to completely cover the sleeping area. Tuck the edges under the mattress so mosquitoes cannot enter.

-Gently wash your net when dirty using a mild soap.

-LLINs usually lose their potency after 20 washes or 3 years.

-Dry your LLIN in the shade after washing so that the insecticide lasts longer.
