Semester System Was Introduced To Remove Challenges Facing Parents With Both Kids At Primary And JHS

The Spokesperson for the Miniltry of Education, Mr. Kwasi Kwarteng says the semester system was introduced to both levels to curb problems faced by parents who had to make different child care arrangements for their children in Primary and JHS.

He admitted that although the semester system has been replaced with trimester, both systems never had advantage over each other in terms of learners achievements outcomes.

In a post shared on his official Facebook page on Saturday, 22nd January 2022, he wrote;

"Semester system was introduced by GES last year at the JHS level to remove challenges facing parents who had to make different child care arrangements for their wards in Primary and JHS they justified its extension to primary school.

Both systems have no inherent advantage in terms of student learning outcomes.

Therefore after listening to union leaders and teachers expressing their preference for the trimester system the Minister for Education directed GES to revert to the Trimester system."

His comments comes as a background to the replacement of the semester system of the 2022 academic calendar with a trimester base for all basic schools. According to the new calendar, the first term vacation is scheduled for 15th April to 9th May 2022.
