Residents of Katua in the Wa East District of the Upper West Region have expressed concerns over the lack of classroom furniture in the basic schools in the community.

According the residents, the situation has adverse impact on their children’s education as it negatively affects effective and smooth running of teaching and learning activities in the school.

The Unit Committee Chairman for the Katua Electoral Area, Sandiang Gomina who spoke in an interview, revealed that, pupils who are left with no alternative, sit on the hard bare floor while others lie on their stomachs to learn.

He said that the situation has become a great source of worry to parents and guardians especially in this era of COVID-19 pandemic.

Another resident, Banti Haruna, lamented that the lack of furniture in the schools has encouraged absenteeism and truancy among the pupils.

He further bewailed that the situation demoralizes both pupils and teachers from in putting in their best efforts.

Nafisa Osman, another resident, on her part, restated the need for furniture to enhance effective teaching and learning, adding that, they are doing their best towards helping the school internally.

She however bemoaned that, their efforts have been constrained by poor income generation at their end, hence, their persistent call for external support.

The residents therefore called on the Wa East District Assembly and Non-Governmental Organizations to come to their aid
