Honourable Haruna Iddrisu, the NDC caucus Leader in Parliament has revealed that, during the preparations towards the Speakership race for the 8th parliament, some of the NDC Members of Parliament came to him; and asking him to contest for the Speakership position, but he rejected.
Honourable Iddrisu made these revelations when speaking at a thanksgiving church service held by Rt. Honourable Alban Bagbin (Speaker of Parliament), at Waala Traditional Area, in Nadowli-Kaleo Constituency, in the Upper West Region.
According to the NDC Leader in Parliament, at that time, “a group of NDC MPs led by Mahama Ayariga, some of our colleagues and my able whip Muntaka Mubarak had come to my office to lure me and to encourage me to run for the position of Speaker”, but without any hesitation, he refused it.
The Honourable added that, during a meeting with the NDC party's highest leadership in the office of former President John Mahama, "I said to the group that my candidate for a Speaker was among us, (pointing to Alban Bagbin), but before I could finish speaking, Mr. Aseidu Nketia held the hand of Honourable Bagbin strongly, and said it should be the Bagbin”.
Honourable Haruna Iddrisu again said that, their inability to effectively influence decisions in the House of Parliament, have lead to the many criticisms from the NDC party members, and that, it is difficulty in dealing with accusations of corruption and claims that he was betraying the NDC.
He added that, Rt. Honourable Alban Kingsford Bagbin is not just the ordinary Speaker, but the most qualified and experienced among the group who can be trusted.
Do you think Honourable Haruna Iddrisu, should have been the Speaker of Parliament, as initially planned by his colleagues in parliaments?
