NDC In Big Tussle With Electoral Commission Again

The opposition National Democratic Congress is in another tussle with the elections management body on voter register.

It is recalled that, the electoral commission announced recently that it intended to accept only the Ghana Card as the sole identity card to have one get into the voter register going forward. According to the EC, individuals who just turned 18 years and those who could not take part in previous registration exercises will need the Ghana card to enable them get a voter ID. The deputy electoral commissioner Dr. Bossman Asare told journalists that the commission will also put in place continues registration exercise.

But the NDC has vehemently opposed the EC's decision to accept the Ghana Card as the only means of identification. According to the General Secretary of the party, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the NDC believes the EC is using that strategy to reduce the number of voters in future elections. He said the commission is mandated by the constitution to take steps to expand the voter population as much as possible and not the reverse.

Explaining further, General Mosquito said up to four million Ghanaians will be disenfranchised if the new policy is implemented. He said according to available data, about 16 million Ghanaians aged 15 years and above have the Ghana Card. Meanwhile the voter register currently has about 21 million voters.

General Mosquito added that the National Identification Authority has stated time and over that it cannot issue a Ghana card to every Ghanaian in the next three years. This means the policy cannot be fully enrolled before the next election. He wondered why the EC is being headstrong when the NIA policy is not fully implemented.

He promised the NDC will be first to support the Ghana Card identify system if the NIA policy was fully implemented and every Ghanaian had a Ghana card.

"We will never allow the Jean Mensah lead EC to use wicked strategies to reduce voter population in Ghana. That is not what the constitution says. So what we are saying is that is every Ghanaian get a Ghana card, NDC will be first to support the idea. Until then, it is a no for us", Asideu Nketia said.

In a related development, the former chairman of the electoral commission, Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan has advised the EC against the use of the Ghana card as the sole identity tool to get registered as a voter. He stated that it will disenfranchised many Ghanaians.
