The Supreme Court On Wednesday, April 13, 2022, ruled by a majority decision of 5-2 that the member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyekye Quayson should stop holding himself as a lawmaker.
Meanwhile, a member of the National Democratic Congress Legal Team, Lawyer Abraham Amaliba mentioned after the ruling that, the people of Assin North Constituency have not been treated fairly and that, they don't have a representation in Parliament.
"The people of Assin North have been denied a representation in Parliament and that is not democracy. We are weighing our options, we are meeting today to determine the next line of action.” Lawyer Amaliba told TV3 Midday in an interview on April 13.
Meanwhile, the Attorney General of the country, Godfred Dame held a different view. He said that, Hon. James Gyekye should be treated as Adamu Dramani Sakande, the former NPP MP for Bawku.
” Think that there ought to be even application of the law, there ought to be an equal application of the law, the same fate that befell Adamu Sakande who was not qualified at the time that nominations were opened and we all know what happened to him. Subsequently, they declared him ineligible and his seat was taken away so there ought to be even application of the law.” Godfred Dame boldly told the media present at the Supreme Court after the ruling.
Mr. Adamu Dramni was unfortunately sentenced to two years imprisonment because he was found guilty of false declaration of office, perjury, and deceiving a public officer. He contested the MP for Bawku Constituency when he had not completely denounced himself as a citizen of the United Kingdom (UK).
