President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has told the new Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education that the government will provide logistics to enable her to carry out her constitutional responsibility. As a result, he asked Kathleen Addy to seek a stakeholder dialogue in order for the Commission's mandate to be fulfilled successfully.
President Akufo-Addo reminded the new NCCE Chairperson of her independence, which is guaranteed by the 1992 Constitution, and asked her not to be subject to any authority's control. He continued, "I assure you Madam Chairperson of government recognition as enshrined in Act 452 of the NCCE's independence."
"I do not think I need to remind you, Madam Chairperson, that you are not subject to the direction or control of any person or authority in the performance of your functions, including myself as the Executive's head." On Thursday, June 16, the President spoke at the Jubilee House at the swearing-in ceremony for Madam Kathleen Addy as the new Chairperson of the NCCE.
Madam Joseph Nkrumah, who had resigned from the position to take up an ambassadorial appointment with the Economic Community of West African States, was replaced (ECOWAS). President Akufo-Addo has expressed resistance to some sections' claims that the NCCE has grown ineffective in carrying out its tasks.
He emphasized that, given recent agitation by some elements for the overthrow of the Fourth Republican Constitution, all of the Commission's tasks are even more important today. "Despite concerns made in some areas regarding the NCCE's effectiveness and execution of its tasks, with some even advocating for its elimination, I am of a different mind.
"I believe the NCCE is still relevant and has an important role to play in helping to establish a culture of awareness in our country where citizens are aware of their civic responsibilities and duties, particularly at this time when some irresponsible elements within the political system are calling for the overthrow of the constitutional order."
