A lot of Ghanaians have been reacting to the news about the payment of allowances to firsts and second ladies in Ghana. Apart from the budgetary allocations to the offices of the first and second ladies, Ghanaians have come to realize that there have been payment of monthly allowances to the wives of the current and former president's and vice presidents.
This issue became topical when the Akufo-Addo led NPP government proposed to regularize the payment of such amounts and begin paying them salaries instead of allowances. This proposition by the government has generated a lot of controversies among the general public. The former president John Dramani Mahama and his wife Mrs. Lordina Mahama were quick to reject the payment of such salaries to first ladies, including Lordina herself.
But Ghanaians have suddenly come to realize that Mrs. Lordina Mahama has all along been receiving such allowances. She has received an amount of about GH¢3.2 million since 2009 when she became the second lady before becoming first lady. Several Ghanaians have expressed their discontent with these payments to Mrs. Lordina Mahama and the others.
Several of them have expressed their anger against the former president John Dramani Mahama for canceling the allowances of poor students of teacher and nursing training colleges whist at the same time paying huge allowances to his wife without the knowledge of Ghanaians. The following are some of the reactions from Ghanaians on social media.
