The Supreme Court ruling on the Assin North MP has taken the nation by storm. Many have argued that a high court had already made a ruling on this and as such the Supreme Court shouldn’t have meddled in this matter and made another verdict. The Supreme Court in a 5-2 ruling decided that James Gyakye Quayson cannot hold himself as MP until a substantive case against him is determined.

In an interview with Joy News, Lawyer Abraham Amaliba, head of the NDC Legal Team insisted that they are disappointed with the ruling but insisted that they have 2 options in the way forward. He mentioned that in the interim the NDC will lead James Quayson to seek a review of the ruling of the Supreme Court. He added that when this fails then they have no option than to prepare the party for a by election.

The NDC are at risk of losing an MP in their fold if the Supreme Court still upholds the verdict. In the 2020 elections, James Quayson beat the NPP rival, Abena Durowaa Mensah with 55.21% despite President Akufo-Addo winning the presidential contest there by 50.81%
