The Majority Caucus in Parliament led by the Minister of Parliament for Asante Achem North, Lawyer Andy Appiah Kubi held a press conference to inform the President, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo of their plans to boycott Parliament during the 2023 budget hearing if he doesn't relieve the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta and the Minister of State, Mr. Charles Adu Boahen of their duties.
The Majority believe that the two Ministers have not performed their duties properly in dealing with this economic crisis the nation is facing currently.
If the President fails to do this they will not come to Parliament for the 2023 budget hearing which is happening 15th November, 2022.
“If our request is not responded to positively, we will not be present for the budget hearing, neither will we participate in the debate,” Mr Appiah-Kubi stated during the press conference.
However, the President has already indicated that he will not sack or reshuffle any Minister in his cabinet because he sees no need to do that. He stated during an interview that the Finance Minister has done an excellent job so far and the current economic crisis is not his fault. He stated that since he came into power in his first term, the Finance Minister worked hard to help the country have an average growth of 7% which allowed to initiate developmental programs in the nation.
“I came to office in 2017 under a stringent IMF programme. This same man was able to manage the affairs of our economy in such a way that in my first term, we were one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.
“An average growth rate of 7% which allowed us to initiate programmes such as Planting for Food and Jobs. So somebody who has been able to do that. The current difficulties are not his fault. So how do I do it? What will be the basis? What will be the rationale.”
As a Ghanaian, who do you think is making the right decision? The Majority Caucus in Parliament or the President? Share your thoughts in the comments.
