We Will Make Every Working Person Including Churches To Pay Tax – Kweku Annan Boldly Speaks

Today, Wednesday, November 17, 2021 the Finance Minister presented his reading of the 2022 Budget. Even before the budget presentation, there had been several calls for the government to decrease prices on fuel and taxes in general. Though some Ghanaians were optimistic, others felt that there will be nothing good from the budget reading.

Key points in the budget included a complete shutdown on all road tolls whereas a 1.7% tax was placed on Momo transactions that exceeded 100 cedis. There have been reactions regarding the budget with Ghanaians showing mixed reactions. The Minority in Parliament however lambasted the content of the budget and concluded that it will further burden the ordinary Ghanaian.

On ‘The Seat’ with Kweku Annan, the investigative journalist raised questions as to why the NDC are against the new Momo taxes. According to him no government can work without imposing taxes. He explained that John Mahama cannot promise to clear all taxes when he comes to power. To complicate matters, Kweku Annan blasted Isaac Adongo and Ato Forson of the NDC for criticizing the new budget. He was emphatic that every earning person must contribute in taxes to grow the economy.

Kweku Annan announced that he agrees with calls to make churches pay taxes because they receive so much money. He called on the government to take it into consideration and charge churches. He explained that as one of the richest institutions, the church needed to be taxed to help develop the country. He explained that by entering and commenting on political issues they are eligible to be taxed.

It is interesting that Kweku Annan has realized that no government can work without taxes. Perhaps he forgets that before the NPP came to power, they complained about the taxes the NDC had imposed on citizens and promised to reduce it. maybe that is the tendency of political parties. The promise and do the opposite when they come to power. Taxes are indispensable in growing every country but it is important to control it so it doesn’t overburden Ghanaians.

Were you impressed with the budget? Do you agree that churches should be taxed?
