A popularly known private legal practitioner, Yaw Oppong has shared his thoughts on the issues that arose after the declaration of the 2020 presidential elections by the Chairperson of the electoral commission as the flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has recently rejected the verdict.

According to Lawyer Yaw Oppong, he said the only place permitted by law for aggrieved political parties when it came to election declaration disputes is the Supreme Court.

Private legal practitioner, Yaw Oppong stated on 3Fm/ TV3’s program entitled, ‘The Key Points’ that there is no clear-cut indication of the next line of action for the opposition party and its flag bearer, John Mahama regarding the outcome of this year’s election as they rejected the verdict.

He later emphasized that, all procedures that will be put in place to express dissatisfaction of the Chairperson of the electoral commission’s verdict will not end up overturning the results.

“Just go to court. It will usually calm your supporters down because they know that they risk going to jail or otherwise been punished for contempt”

The private legal practitioner also suggested that the NDC and its flag bearer, John Mahama should write a book just like what the NPP did after the 1992 elections since the opposition party have already declared Jean Mensah’s verdict as ‘The Real Stolen Verdict’.

Lawyer Yaw Oppong also highlighted that, there were so many ways of showing dissatisfaction with the electoral process.

He stated that, one of the remedy was to document the issue in writing as a means of keeping record just like the NPP’s in 1992 since the former President, John Mahama declared the 2020 presidential results as the Real Stolen Verdict.

“Are they going to write a book about it, then rethink about how to participate in the next elections 2024? Then, there were hints about Lawyers being ready, a legal team being put together to help the people in the constituencies.

The private legal practitioner, Yaw Oppong in conclusion suggested that, the NDC’s flag bearer, John Mahama should rethink about how to participate in the next elections come 2024 after writing a book about the just ended 2020 presidential elections.

Do you think the flag bearer of the NDC, John Mahama should consider going to court or rethink about how to participate in the 2024 presidential elections?
