These programmes are making significant contributions in shaping the socio-political discourse in Ghana. The hosts have been instrumental in holding government accountable and setting agenda for discussions. In no order of importance, I present to you the the top five(5) political/current affairs shows in Ghana.
Ekosiisen is a political, social and current affairs radio programme. It is one of the few political cum current affairs talk shows in Ghana where objectivity and neutrality is held in high esteem. The host of the show is Mr Philip Osei Bonsu. Affectionately called OB, Philip Bonsu works as a Corporate Communications Executive, Entrepreneur and a Broadcast Journalist. He is a Tullow scholar with MSc in Corporate Communication and Public Affairs with vast leadership experience in media practice and leadership.
As the host of arguably the biggest political talk show in Ghana, OB has earned great deal of respect due to his objectivity and the manner in which extract information from his guests. The Ekosiisen host has added more value to the show which attracts thousands of listeners across the country.
2. Kokrookoo, Peace FM
With regular panelists like Kweku Baako, Kwesi Pratt Jr and Alottey Jacobs, Kokrookoo is undoubtedly, one of the most patronized political radio shows in Ghana. It is hosted by a veteran journalist, Kwame Sefa Kayi, who has enviable track record in public speaking and broadcasting. Kwame Sefa Kayi is a multiple award winning broadcaster. Sefa Kayi gained an Executive Master of Arts Degree in Conflict, Peace and Security programme from the Kofi Annan Internal Peacekeeping Training Center.
In 2020, Safa Kayi was adjudged the winner of Radio and Television Personalities Awards, RPT Personality of the Decade 2010-2020. The Kokrookoo show has gained much more popularity due to the personality of Sefa Kayi and reputable regular panelists like Kweku Baako Jr and Kwesi Pratt Jr, who are themselves, veteran journalists. The doption of local Twi language, which is often mixed with English makes it easier for many audiences to relate.
3. Good Morning Ghana, Metro TV
The show which airs from Monday to Friday, between 8am and 10am has a huge audience base. It usually features panelists from the two major political parties, NDC and NPP. However, reputable journalists like Kwesi Pratt and Kweku Baako are also regular panelists. It is the only political talkshow that has an all female panelists on Mondays.
The host of Good Morning Ghana show, Randy Abbey is a communication consultant and holds a Doctorate Degree in Business Administration. In 2006, he received the highest national award, 'Order of the Volta' in addition to a Grand Medal in the same year for his contribution in the qualification and performance of the World Cup debut of debut in Germany, 2006.
Currently, Randy is a member of the Executive Council of Ghana football Association. For 17 years, Dr Abbey has served as the host of Good Morning Ghana. His reputation as an objective and critical analyst has made the show more popular and reputable.
4. Newsfile, Joy FM/TV
To many lovers of social, political and legal issues, Newsfile remains the most authoritative talk show with in-depth analysis from political scientists, legal practitioners, civil society organizations and politicians. The award winning show commands great respect partly because of the objectivity and the high level of neutrality of the host, Samson Lardy Anyenini. Samson is a reputable lawyer and graduate of KNUST.
5. Good Evening Ghana, Metro TV
Good evening Ghana ranks among the most watched political and current affairs programme. The show airs on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9PM. The host, Paul Adom Otchere is a seasoned journalist with about two decades of experience. In 2001, he was awarded the best news reporter in Ghana. In 2017, Paul Adom Otchere was appointed as a member of the governing board of the National Communications Authority by President Akufo-Addo.
Although Paul has helped in creating a niche of viewership for the show, he has been a subject of criticism by supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress, for his perceived bias againet the NDC.
