President Akufo-Addo is in his second and final term as president of Ghana. The constitution of Ghana mandates that a leader can only contest for 2 terms of 4 years each and after that vacate for another person. In Ghana it is no open secret that every political party gets 2 terms equaling 8 years and after that the party is kicked out for another party.
President Akufo-Addo is currently in the Ashanti Region and is causing stir with certain comments. Last week he raised eyebrows when he introduced 2 people in his government who sought to take his seat as president after 2024.
In an interview with Pure FM in the Ashanti Region, Akufo-Addo has reiterated that he will not openly support anyone who wishes to become his party’s flagbearer. He was however of the view that it will be a party decision and he will stand by that.
When asked about political instability in West Africa, he noted that leaders might have failed on not checking and scrutinizing leaders who seek to entrench themselves in power. He called on African leaders to respect the laws and do what is needful to avoid political crises. When asked if he will consider amending the constitution and ask for a third term, this is what he said
“Adinkra, why? Do you want trouble for me? That is completely out of the question. Completely out! 7th January, 2025, Goodbye Ghana, thank you Ghana. I will probably end up in Kyebi and go relax” President Akufo-Addo said causing everyone in the studio to erupt in fits of laughter.
President Akufo-Addo insisted that the breaking of the 8 years of governance is possible and that the ruling NPP are doing everything possible to make sure that Ghanaians choose and stick with the New Patriotic Party after 2025.
