Recent developments in the financial sector and finance related expenditure has caused a lot of Ghanaians especially the youth to sound an alarm and question the actual amount of money the president of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, receives in salary every month.
According to various reactions from individual Ghanaians on various media platforms across board, the indiscriminate allocation of the national budget to some expenditures deemed as unnecessary in the second term of President Nana Akuffo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party government is becoming too alarming and that they wonder how much the President's take-home pay would be.
Recently, Parliament had approved two bills presented by the Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, that has really caused tension and general uprising in the media space. The two proposed bills included salary for the first and second ladies of state, and a proposed $28 million to be distributed to MPs of the 8th Parliament for purchasing vehicles.
On the first hand, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo through the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta has sent a bill proposal detailing some reasons why the First Lady, Rebecca Akuffo-Addo and the Second Lady, Samira Bawumia and subsequent ladies to be paid a certain amount in salary from January 2017, to Parliament for approval.
Further news indicated that this proposed expenditure has been approved by the house. This has left a lot of public debate and wild conversations about the singular reason for doing this.
On the second hand, the Minister for Finance has again made another proposal to Parliament for approval which purportes to secure a loan of 28 million dollars ($28 million) to be distributed to all 275 Members of the 8th Parliament for the procurement of V8s.
The public backlash that followed this proposal is currently a whole story on its own. However, the citizenry are asking one important question: If the huge expenditures are incurred on these 'unnecessary' stuffs, how much is the salary of President Nana Akuffo-Addo now?
