The election of the speaker of parliament has become one of the most tensed moments for both political parties after the 2020 general election. The new patriotic party as well as the national democratic congress have all yearned to have a member from their party taking charge of parliament and becoming the speaker of parliament. Alan Bagbin, the newly elected speaker of parliament served as a minister in government until 2013 where he was replaced.
The Honorable politician who served as a deputy speaker of parliament as well has been elected as the speaker and causing massive wave. The Ndc after alleging that they had been cheated in the general election have long wished for their member to be in parliament as the chairperson (speaker). And this long awaited wish has finally materialized for them.
One of the few things which have marveled Ghanaians is the fact that some members of the new patriotic party voted in favor of this Ndc elected speaker of parliament. The Npp won majority in parliament and hence were seen to be the possible party to have more votes in this speaker of parliament election. However, an alleged number of about five persons from the Npp voted for Alan Bagbin.
These numbers from the Npp who voted for him pushed him to a difference of 3 between him and his competitor thus making him the speaker elect for the 8th parliament. Since the votes are discrete, it is impossible to know which members of the Npp voted in favor of Honorable Bagbin and what was their motives behind this move.
