In the debate organized by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) in 2012, the then NPP presidential candidate criticized the Mahama administration of excessive borrowing with nothing to show for borrowing that much.
" In the four years of which they have been in power, they have more than tripled our national debt from ¢9bn which was at the end of the Kufour's period to ¢28bn as at Today" In the four years of the NDC, they have contracted more debt than all the governments of our country from Kwame Nkrumah right down to Kufour. He stated.
"When we are talking about the debt profile of country, we need to bear in mind two things:
1 The areas into which the debt goes
2. Equally critical is the value for money of these transactions that the debt brings about." We need to look at that. He emphasized.
Some public Procurements are taking place in our country at extremely inflated rates.
"We to be extremely discipline about the contraction of debt. We are first of all going the teachings of the National budget. We will not be stepping outside the constraints of the budget".
But if you check the current debt of Ghana, it is at a whooping ¢218bn under the same Akuffo Addo who promised Ghanaians that he will be discipline and conform with the directives of the National budget. It is quite interesting to note that, the NPP along has borrowed over ¢150bn in just four years without out anything to point to compared to the NDC's ¢39bn in 8 years of the Mills- Mahama regime with the massive Infrastructural projects that have flooded the length and bridth of this country. The NPP is indeed borrowing recklessly.
