EC Planning to Create 25 Constituencies; 11 in One Particular Region- Haruna Alleged

The Minority Leader of Parliament, Mr Haruna Iddrisu has alleged that the Electoral Commission of Ghana is planning to create 25 more constituencies ahead of the 2024.

The Tamale South MP told Bernard Avle of Citi TV/FM that intelligent gathered by his party indicates that out of the 25 new constituencies the EC is planning to create, 11 of them are going to be in one particular.

According to him, if this turned out to be true, the NDC will will resist it and ensure that it does not materialised.

The provisional data of the 2021 population and housing census shows that the population of Ghana has increased by 6.1 million since 2010.

Worthy of note is that, in 2012, the Electoral Commission created additional 45 to move the number from 230 to 275, following the 2010 population census.

Expectedly, the 6.1 rise in the population since 2010 provides for the possibility of creating new constituencies.

However, it must be pointed out that apart from population, other factors like geographical size also influence the creation of new constituencies.

Nonetheless, some regions particularly the Greater Accra are likely to see more constituencies due to the massive population growth in the past decade.

It is interesting to note that the Greater Region has overtaken the Ashanti Region as the most populous Region in Ghana, perhaps as a result of rural-urban migration.

Currently, the Ashanti Region has 47 constituencies. The Greater Accra Region on the other hand has 34 constituencies.

Based on this statistics and holding all other factors constant, the NDC is likely to argue that if there is any region in Ghana that deserves more constituencies, it should be Greater Accra not the Ashanti Region.
