Ghana’s Parliament has 275 members with the membership being 137 apiece for both major parties. The balance is a little tilted because the mediator, MP for Fomena has chosen to side with the Majority in Parliament. One of the oldest in the House is currently the Speaker, who spent about 7 terms as MP.
It was a jovial conversation as Okudzeto Ablakwa, MP for North Tongu teased Nana Akomea, Director at the State Transport Corporation on Randy Abbey’s programme. According Okudzeto, it was premature for Nana Akomea to have retired or stepped down from being an MP. He explained that the wisdom of people like Nana Akomea are needed in Parliament.
Nana Akomea however felt different about the suggestion. According to him he has already contributed his quota by serving for 4 terms. Nana Akomea served as MP for the Okaikoi South constituency winning the 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008 elections on the ticket of the NPP. He added that he has had enough.
Apparently, Okudzeto Ablakwa wasn’t still pleased and sought Randy Abbey’s support in convincing Nana that he retired so early. At that instance Nana Akomea said, “wait until you serve for 4 terms. After you chop your 4, then you can come and challenge me”
Okudzeto Ablakwa is currently in his 4th term in office as MP. His journey started in 2009. Many say a man of his caliber has a long way to go. The North Tongu MP will turn 41 next month.
