The president has warmed hearts with his May day message to all Ghanaians. Today is a special day for all workers of the country irrespective of the sector one belongs as usual the president is suppose to address the nation on such special occasion.
Though the president did not speak on salary increment for workers which many were expecting. What he said has got a lot of people talking about the true state of the economy.
"In addition the first unemployment insurance scheme ceded by government is being championed by the social partnership council and it is to be established by year end.
“We also use this year to ensure that all workers are vaccinated to protect their lives and enhance their productivity. I have taken the decision to freeze salary increment for this year, 2021 for myself as president, the vice president, ministers, deputy ministers and all appointees of the executive.
“It is our modest contribution to reduce the damage to our public revenue and to help hasten our nation’s recovery from the ravages of the pandemic.”
Though it is a good call by the president and all his appointees to freeze increments in their salaries for the year 2021 as said by the president more has to be done to be able to protect the public purse.
The quantum of money that the country looses through corruption is enough to build a nation better for us all.
Though the salary freeze is a good initiative but more has to be done to ensure all leakages within the economy are sealed in order to avoid unnecessary borrowings.
This will go a long way to beat down our public debt in order to reduce our debt to GDP ratio.
This will afford the government more funds to embark on massive developmental projects and also give workers rewarding remuneration.
The government must expedite action on the salary issues for workers for 2021 because there is too much hardships in the country currently.
A group of concerned teachers has also called on government to complete negotiations for the base pay for 2021 before the end of May.
All these calls are in view of the hardships workers are enduring lately.
