Benjamin Kumbour made this interesting revelation on Citi TV's Face to Face show when he was speaking about the reorganization and future of the party going into the 2024 elections. According to the former minister, John Mahama is tried and tested and has been there before.
"John Mahama is tried and tested. He has not only ministerial and parliamentary experience, he has Presidential experience and he is our best bet. If you look at the odds in opposition and if you were to see the showing despite the heckle whiles in power, you will see that we bounced back effectively after the crashing defeat in 2016 in the just ended 2020 elections".
"He led the campaign and I keep saying that when a leader is flagged for things that went wrong, we should also be charitable enough to give him the credit when things go well. And so when things don't go well and you criticize John Mahama, when things go well credit him".
Dr. Kumbour answered in affirmation of whether the party should repeat the John Mahama ticket despite his capacity to do only one term as President.
"There is only one element about doing a one term. You see when you set a precedent of somebody doing just one term and you clout him out, it becomes institutionalised. Anybody with some ambition after one term will say you also get out and the reference point will be that it was done to John Mahama. So you need to be careful".
"Yes! the party should repeat John Mahama ticket. I don't like making these statements because of my position in the party and we know that there are proceedings for the party to decide that we have open the lid for political activity and people can indicate their preferences for whoever they support".
He dismissed rumours of he having a bad relationship with John Mahama and entreated party supporters not to create enemies for him.
