Over the week, Ghanaians have been thrown into a state of confusion after a statement from the Ghana Armed Forces asked for the withdrawal of some 4 security personnel from the office of the Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Bagbin. According to the statement, their processes of selecting them were informal and failed to follow the due process.
The statement sparked a longstanding controversy between some concerned Ghanaians who have alleged of a possible machinations against the Honourable Speaker. According to some NDC communicators, the withdrawal of the security is an attempt to intimidate the Speaker over the impending Electronic transactions levy in the Chamber.
Earlier today, January 17, 2021, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority (NYA) and former Deputy Minister for Information, Mr. Pius Hadzide was interviewed by Johnny Hughes on the TV3 NewDay show. It was a heated discussion as Pius Hadzide jumped to the defence of the Armed Forces and state over the removal of the named military personnel.
According to Pius Hadzide, the information reaching his desk has it that the withdrawn officers were improperly selected to protect the Speaker. He believes the security agency in its intelligence has come to acknowledge the need for a more proper selection to be done. He believes the formal withdrawal would rather help to reduce the threats againt the security of the Speaker.
Speaking further, Pius Hadzide registered his disappointment over the attempt by some Ghanaians to accuse government of interference. He blamed the allegations of government influence on the opposition National Democratic Congress. He has called on Ghanaians to disregard unfounded allegations against the government. He said, "I have also been advised that the Speaker requested that one military personnel be made a Marshal of Parliament."
However, Johnny Hughes interjected to condemn the statement by Pius Hadzide. Johnny Hughes revealed that such attempts have not been made by the Speaker.
