Ho, V/R: But For The Military, I would Have Won The Elections– JM Alleges

On Monday, October 18, 2021, the Former President and 2020 flag bearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), His Excellency John Dramani Mahama in an interview at Global 105.1FM in the Volta Regional capital, Ho, has allegedly stated that if not for the involvement of the military in the last general elections, the NDC would have won both the presidential elections and the simple majority in the 8th Parliament.

Former President John Dramani Mahama, as part of his tour of the country to thank the good people of Ghana for massively voting for him, recounted how some of the ballot boxes got missing on their way to the regional collation centers but the Electoral Commission was able to subvert the will of the people and declared who they wanted to declare the winner.

The host of the interview asked the former President if he thinks that the NDC has hope of winning elections in Ghana, especially the upcoming 2024 elections.

Mr Mahama said that "but for the involvement of those people in military uniforms who were deployed to the various collation centers, preventing the entry of some NDC representatives at the various centers, and sadly killing about eight innocent individuals, the National Democratic Congress would have won the election."

"You and I know that the NDC pulled about 4 million votes in the 2016 presidential election. However, in the last election, this number increased to over 6 million votes. This clearly tells you the prospects of the NDC taking over power in the next elections is so vibrant. All we have to do is to reorganize ourselves especially at the branch levels to strengthen our grassroots," he added.

"Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Madam Jean Mensah has declared results even when there were lots of outstanding issues. Unfortunately, we can't change her because we are not in power. But I wish that she works better and more transparently to redeem herself," John Mahama stated.

Mr Mahama also discomfited statements made by some stalwart members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) such as Lord Commeymey, about handing over power to only the next leader of the party and not to any other person, describing them as undemocratic and rude and a craving for power.

According to him, the decision as to who becomes president is entirely dependent on who God chooses and the will of the people and some undemocratic system of ruling and insatiable taste for power.
