NDC is Likely To Be First Party In Ghana, To Produce 1st Female President - Felix Ofosu Kwakye

NDC Communicator and former Deputy Minister of Information during Mahama's presidency has asserted that, if there is going to be a female president ever in Ghana, it is most likely the NDC that will spearhead such a novelty, as the party's ideologies has so far exhibited commitment to gender involvement in leadership and is far beyond tribalist limitations, as seen in the ruling NPP.

Felix Ofosu was of the view that, the tribalist statements of the Majority's leader, Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah is an indication that, the party is no where near the change of its perspective of a simplistic "Ashanti" owned party, to inculcate a nationalistic view, like that of the NDC, whiles speaking on Alhaji and Alhaji, over the weekend.

"It is clear, according to the NPP's stalwart that, the NPP is considering Bawumia on the mere basis of breaking the eight campaign and not to move away from our Akan people's party mindset. Let me prove this point, the same Kyei Mensah is on record to have said that, he does not see someone who is not Akan leading the party, so why this sudden switch?"

It will be recalled that, the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, shared in an interview with Joy News TV that, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will be better served if the party presents a non-Akan flagbearer for the 2024 elections, as according to him, a change in direction is required, as the party has already produced two Akan Presidents in John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo. He also noted that picking a presidential candidate from another ethnicity will also help to dispel claims that the NPP is an ‘Akan party’.

Speaking on Joy News’ The Probe, the Majority was quick to add that this was his personal opinion. “Inwardly, I know I have the competence to lead the party but is it wise that after two Akans – former President Kufuor and current President Akufo-Addo – to present a flagbearer candidate with different ethnicity, I think it is not good for a party which has been accused by some as being overly Akanistic in nature. But not everybody would agree with me and that is the beauty of democracy.” Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu had said.

Felix Ofosu Kwakye, further responding said that, the NPP must show that, in this 2st century and even with votes and national offices in all regions in the nation, it must move away quickly from its Akan tribalist perspective. He cited this example " look critically at the larger numbers of the governments appointees, look at the party's leadership and you can draw a consistent line of numerous Akans been the underlining majority and it is unfortunate".

Comparing it to his party, he drew a sharp contrast "look at the NDC, we have made conscious efforts to move away from such mundane reasons. You cannot pinpoint a specific tribalist-conscious efforts in appointments. Even when Mahama was accused of same, a critical look shows that, it was a useless and baseless propaganda, that cannot be proven. And see how Mahama selected a female as the party's running mate. It shows how as a party, we are forward thinking and progressive and i can tell you that, if Ghana will have its first Female president, I am sure that, it will be the NDC leading this novel way" he said.

"If you are listening to me and you are a female or a young person and have hopes of leading this nation in any capacity, please consider the NDC, as there will be no calculated and intentional party tradition and mind set, to denigrate your ambitions and opportunities on a useless basis of your tribe, there are far more important factors such as your competence, your qualifications, etc." he added.

Already, the statements of Kyei Mensah has attracted major backlashes even from his own party folks. Most recently, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) group calling itself the Concerned Northern Grassroots of NPP asked that, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu must be called to order before he does more harm to the party following his none-Akan comments.

Accusing Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu of chasing his Vice Presidential dreams with those comments, the group insists that he should be cautious in order not to play into the trap of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), “Of course, we are not the least oblivious to his Vice Presidential aspirations and what he seeks to selfishly achieve even at the expense of the party's collective interest. That is why we need to call him to order before he does the party more harm than he had already done it in Parliament. He should not allow his personal aspirations get him to play into the propaganda trap of the main Opposition that seeks to dictate to us who should lead our great party in the 2024 elections,” part of a press release from the group reads.

The Concerned Northern Grassroots rather believed that, what the NPP needs is a candidate that is most marketable across the board with the highest potential of winning the 2024 elections to break the eight-year jinx.
