The tension about the 2021 annual budget continues to soar and Ghanaians have raised alarms over the content of the budget statement. Many aggrieved people called for the budget to be rejected and the taxes removed.
Unexpectedly, Ghanaians saw series of drama unfold in Parliament as Members of Parliament voted on the approval of the budget. At the end of the vote, the results had it that 137 MPs voted for the budget to be approved while 134 voted against the budget.
Today, March 20, 2021 outspoken Journalist and Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Mr. Kwesi Pratt has angrily reacted to the approval of the budget. In an interview on Alhaji and Alhaji show hosted by Sena Nombo, he has registered his disappointment in Dr. Bawumia over his statement he made years back over the economy.
According to Kwesi Pratt, Dr. Bawumia's deception has caused Ghana and would have to pay for it. He argues, the economy is in shambles considering the current standard of living and the government decision to tax Ghanaians as a means to raise revenue.
"I remember in 2015 the current Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia made a solemn pledge to the nation. Indeed, he delivered a speech in which he said, raising taxes and raising loans are the lazy man's option for mobilising revenues for national development."
"In 4 years, the whole mantra has changed. We are being told that without taxes and borrowing we cannot grow. What happened? If we are to hold government accountable, we should reject this budget. He deceived Ghanaians. He will pay for it in 2024."
