Akwasi Addai Odike, founder and leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP) has come out to question traditional leaders in Ghana. Particularly chiefs in the Ashanti Region of ruling their subject without vision. He pointed out that Chiefs like the pride that comes with being a chief without any vision for their people. The Chiefs have sold out lands entrusted to them to illegal miners whose activities are now a social menace.
In an interview, he said that when he becomes President, he will school the Ashanti chiefs because they know nothing about leadership. Being a leader is about serving your people and not oppressing them. " The lives of your subjects are not important to you(the chiefs). You are only interested in selling our lands to enrich yourself. Akufo-Adoo has only two years of his time as President left. He will not be President forever. But you, the chief, will be chief till you die and all the destruction you are causing in the environment with the help of Nana Akufo Addo will be your burden. What is your vision? Tell us the vision you have for the Ashanti land" he said.
He later questioned the Ashanti chiefs on how they could call themselves leaders. People become chiefs, and all they think about is the lands they can sell to enrich themselves. That is their mindset. He added that when he becomes President, chiefs will not have one hundred percent of the lands. The government will own part of it. What do you have to say about this?
