The former head of the political science department of the Kwame Nkrumah University and also a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Richard Amoako Baah has said the Electronic Levy Bill is unconstitutional as well as 'senseless'.

The Political scientist mentioned that the introduction of the E-levy by his government is one of the laziest approaches by the ruling New Patriotic Party to raise more revenue. He added that the bill when passed will burden Ghanaians the more by making them pay more taxes on the same principal amount.

Dr. Amoako Baah, who happened to be a key member of the NPP Manifesto committee in 2016 and also NPP Ashanti Regional Campaign Committee member and who has also been seen on several campaign platforms with then-candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was speaking to Otec FM's Dwabrem Political Show in Kumasi when he made these claims about the E-Levy.

About the Levy being unconstitutional and that it will burden the ordinary Ghanaian, Dr. Amoako Baah said "The E-Levy for me is unconstitutional, how can you tell a government worker who has already paid his tax to pay another tax on the same principal amount just because he sent it through an electronic transaction."

Furthermore, while Dr. Amoako was trying to justify his point that the Levy is 'senseless', he mentioned that supposing someone owes a tax and decides to pay the tax through electronic transfer, the person has to pay for the levy thereby paying for double tax must because he chose to pay by electronic.

"Assuming I owe the government some tax and I decide to send the money through electronic transfer, and you ask me to pay another tariff on the same amount I am using to settle my tax, this to me makes no sense," Dr. Amoako said.

This claim of Dr. Amoako comes as a surprise since he's the first known NPP man speaking against the controversial E-Levy.
