Tarkwa MCE was confirmed illegally, we will challenge it in court- Assembly Members

Twenty Assembly Members of the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Assembly have threatened to injunct the functionality of Municpal Chief Executive, Benjamin Kesse, over what they claim was an orchestration by the Western Regional Minister, Kobby Okyere Darko Mensah and some members of the assemby, aligned with the ruling New Patriotic Party, in getting the President's nominee [Benjamin Kesse] confirmed.

The nominee was confirmed this morning with a total of 19 out of 21 votes. Assembly member for Tebrebe Electoral Area, Manasseh Obour said the confirmation was taken without recourse to the assembly's constitution. He indicated that, a majority of the assembly members who are perceived to be protestants to the confirmation of the MCE, were disallowed from entering the assembly hall to cast their vote. He argued that numbers that confirmed the MCE was not representative of the assembly as required by law.

"We were present but they prevented us from entering to vote. Police officers at the entrance used their bats on us" he said.

He alleged that Presiding Member, Emmanuel Gado was taken out of the assembly, and an impression created by some 'cohort' of the MCE, that he has been taken ill and as such they had to appoint an interim Presiding Member to oversee the confirmation.

"We are heading to the High Court to injunct the functionality of the assembly. This is an illegality. They did not employ legal means to confirm the MCE" he intimated.

The assembly on Wednesday rejected the MCE nominee, as he polled 22 yes votes as against 20 no votes. He required a two-thirds of the total votes cast to confirm his appointment.
