Breaking The 8 Not Possible Amidst Current Economic Condition – Akuffo-Addo

President Akuffo-Addo has cast the strongest doubt yet on the chances of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to retain power beyond 2024.

This comes days after the President expressed confidence that his Party, the NPP, will easily win the upcoming elections owing to the good works of his administration and the fact that their closest opponent, the NDC does not look ready and organized for the impending battle in 2024.

Political Parties in Ghana, particularly the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are gearing up for a showdown in Ghana’s forthcoming general elections in the next two years ahead.

The NPP are far ahead in terms of restructuring and have elected new executives to lead them across the various levels of the party with the flag bearer race the only huddle left to cross.

Right after emerging victorious in the 2020 election, the NPP set their sights on the next one, declaring that they will be the first Party in the history of Ghana’s 4th republic to win three consecutive elections.

This gave birth to the now famous mantra “breaking the 8”, meaning they will retain power in 2024 beyond the conventional eight-year rulership.

But President Akuffo-Addo, the leader of the Party in government, says breaking the 8 will not be possible amidst the current economic situation in the country.

Speaking to the North Star Radio in Tamale, the President says Ghana’s economy is suffering due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.

The President however expressed optimism that his government is on the right path to recovering the economy and only that could make “breaking the 8” a reality.

“We did it when we first came to office and I'm of the strong belief that we can do it again because the policies are sound. They are about putting Ghana in the strong place”, he said

“The government which has gone through such difficulties, the IMF economy which we inherited, that was able to go through this covid situation, I am confident that this government with the policies that it has committed to, will find a way to bring our economy back to a better place and improve the lots of Ghanaians”, he added.

He again says that “we are required to do so. Apart from everything else, we are politicians and I’m well aware that if you don't improve things, 2024 is not going to be easy for us at all. This poor mantra of breaking the 8 is certainly not going to be assisted by the economy in disarray”.

“We're going to work in such a way that the people of Ghana themselves will see that these are the people who are a safe pair of hands that you commit the economy into their hands, you commit the nation in their hands and progress will be the result for the people of Ghana so that our goal which has now become part of vocabulary of political discourse in our country...breaking the 8, will become a reality”, he further added.
