Buhari pledges free and fair elections as he delivers his last Democracy Day address as President

This year's Democracy Day speech will be President Muhammadu Buhari's last, he said, adding that Nigeria will have a new leader by this time next year.

He promised a peaceful and open process for electing a new president.

"Fellow Nigerians, this is my final Democracy Day speech as your President," President Buhari said in his address to the nation on the occasion of this year's Democracy Day. You will have a new President in office on June 12th, 2023, exactly one year from today. It is my goal to ensure that a peaceful and transparent election for a new president takes place."

In addition, President Buhari praised all candidates who lost their primaries, regardless of party affiliation, for their willingness to accept defeat in good faith.

He went on to say that the government would not rest until those held captive were freed and their kidnappers brought to justice, emphasizing that "if we all unite, we will be victorious against these agents of terror and destruction."

"We have reformed some of our security structures," says President Muhammadu Buhari. A few of the military equipment we purchased three years ago has arrived and has been put to use.
