I am going to be a polling agent on the day of election - John Mahama

Officers of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have been told to be more scrupulous in picking people who would be representing the party at the election collation centres, come the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Former President John Dramani Mahama, said it should not just be about sending anybody - relatives who lacked understanding of the electoral system. It simply was not about going to sit at the polling station and just watch but that the party agent must have better understanding the electoral system.

They would have to be extra vigilant to prevent election victory from being stolen away from the party.

Addressing members and supporters of the NDC in Ho, the Volta Regional Capital, where he had gone to thank the people for the massive votes they gave to him in the last general election, he declared that he would not be going to the Supreme Court again with another election petition. Another flag bearer of the NDC might probably do that but not him.

Volta, the home region of the party’s founder, former President Jerry John Rawlings, has been loyal to the NDC. Mr Mahama has accused President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of credential that are undemocratic - using the military to sway the results of the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.

He filed an election petition with the Supreme Court asking the court to order a re-run of the presidential election with himself and President Nana Akufo-Addo as the only candidates but the apex court threw out the petition because it was found to have no substance.

Former President Mahama criticized the court’s decision and told the gathering that he accepted the ruling for the sake of the country’s peace.

This time around they would ensure that the right things are done at the collation centres.

Although he had not been confirmed as the party’s flag bearer, he stated; “All of us are going to be polling agents. I am the presidential candidate but will go and sit at a polling station and be a polling agent on that day.”

He encouraged party officers and supporters to volunteer as polling agents.

He all called for the party people not to leave the task of telling the achievements - success story of the government he led, to him alone.
