The internal battle within the governing New Patriotic Party over who becomes the next flagbearer for the party in 2024 elections is becoming intense day in and day out. Many popular and influential stalwarts have emerged as potential candidates, who have all been jostling for the position to lead the party after Akuffo-Addo's tenure.
Obviously, the leading candidates are the current Trade Minister, Honourable Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen and Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia. Other potential candidates including MP for Assin Central constituency, Honourable Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Agric Minister, Dr. Afriyie Akoto and former Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko have also declared their intentions of leading the party to break the 8 year jinx.
On the Good Evening Ghana show hosted by Paul Adom-Otchere, a Senior Political Science Lecturer at University of Ghana, Dr. Kobby Mensah has predicted the person likely to lead the NPP in 2024. According to Dr. Kobby, the contest will be a competitive one considering how Bawumia and Alan have respectively served with experience in the party.
Reacting to Akuffo-Addo's decision that he does not support any of the candidates, he indicated that Akuffo-Addo has exhibited good leadership owing to the fact that it could bring divisions into the government. He has stated that Alan has proven to be a solid candidate to lead the party. He however posited that, for Alan Kyerematen to win he must win the support of past candidates like former President Kuffuor and Akuffo-Addo.He said, "Over the years, Alan has built a veryconsolidated support base. So I am not sure that Bawumia or other potential candidates have the ability to defeat him. He has been contesting over the years, at least sympathy votes will make him win."
He added, "What is likely to be a big problem for Alan Kyerematen is how he will get the support from Kuffuor and Akuffo-Addo if he leaves office. That will be his major challenge but I am sure he can defeat the likes of Bawumia to win."
