According to former TV3 news anchor, Bridget Otoo, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has embarked on swift strategies in order to secure the Speaker of Parliament position in the 8th Parliament.
She made this statement when Cape Coast High Court approved the injunction against the swearing in of James Gyakye Quayson as an elected Member of Parliament for Assin North Constituency. The injunction was approved because of his dual citizenship (Ghanaian and Canadian citizenships) when filling to contest in the elections.
However, Bridget Otoo claimed that some concern citizens in Assin North Constituency petitioned the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) about the dual citizenship of James Gyakye Quayson before the elections.
Nonetheless, the EC was satisfied and allowed him to contest in the parliamentary elections.
She wrote that
“NPP wants speaker at all cost so look at the move they have made hours to the inauguration of the 8th parliament.
If the concerned citizens of Assin North petitioned the EC in relation to the MP elect’s dual citizenship and the EC didn’t take any action then it means the EC was satisfied that indeed he wasn’t a dual citizen of any country and cleared him to contest!”
She wrote this on her Facebook page, dated on January 6, 2020.
Note that a MP cannot stand for parliamentary elections in Ghana if he or she has dual citizenship. It violates the 1992 constitution.
