There is currently a seeming fight in the governing New Patriotic Party over who becomes the next Municipal Chief Executive in Atebubu Amantin.
The party is divided on the possible re-appointment of the current MCE, Mr. Edward Owusu who is considered as a caretaker.
The party was in the news recently when some executives in a press conference called on the president to discontinue the appointment of Mr. Edward Owusu.
There was another press encounter by some elders of the party who supported the re-nomination of the caretaker MCE.
In a report on Citi Television news, some persons in the party could be seen trading blows in the open over the issue.
According to the report, there was a visit by the Bono East Regional Minister when the fight occurred. Explaining the issue, the Director of Communications of the party in the constituency, Mr. Eric Koranteng indicated that they were in the palace with the minister when the fight broke outside.
“The regional minister came on a tour in the municipality then he went to the Omanhene’s palace for a visit. During the discussions at the palace, we heard a loud noise outside then it was some party guys who were fighting among themselves. It was very unfortunate but when I came out and verified, the fight was about the fact that some of them don’t like the renewal mandate of the MCE”. Mr. Eric Koranteng indicated.
Mr. Eric Koranteng further confirmed that the issue has brought a lot of division in the party. He says if the President should reappoint the MCE, there will not be peace in the party.
“After the December elections, the difference between the NDC and NPP was 9,991. That is almost ten thousand votes so we need someone who can overcome this gap and that is why the people are saying that they dislike the MCE. It’s not that he has not performed well. So we are begging the President of the Republic that he should give us someone, who can bring all of us together”.
However, some members of the party have also jumped to the defense of the MCE. Mr. Eric Koranteng indicated.
