The member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya Honorable Sarah Adwoa Safo has been out of parliament for over a year now and there have been calls for her removal by some civil society organizations and a section of the general public.
For her absence, she was sacked by the President in July 2022 from her position as the Gender Minister after calls on the President to take such action became louder.
The two other MPs who are expected to be removed as members of the house are Honorable Kennedy Agyapong the Assin Central Lawmaker, and the MP for Ayawaso Central, Henry Quartey.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin submitted that "it goes without saying that the preliminary objection of the Majority Leader to the admissibility of the motion for consideration of the report of the committee, is hereby dismissed in limine (at the outset)"
Alban Bagbin further added that "it's my humble view that even what the Table Office does in trying to compute the days that a member absents himself, is not final. It's for the committee (privileges committee) to investigate and establish the facts".
He also touched on the allegations leveled against Honorable Adwoa Safo for haven been absent for more than 15 sittings of parliament without written permission from (him) the Speaker of Parliament. And this is what Alban Bagbin said "again, the fact that it's alleged that the Speaker has not given permission in writing is also not final. Evidence must be produced before the committee."
The Speaker of Parliament then sent a message to the committee stating that "the fact that the committee says 'this reason is reasonable or not reasonable' is not also final." He explained that it is for the house to go through it and reach a finality on the matter "because the mandate given to an MP; representation, is so crucial that it cannot be left to the subjective view of any person or group of people but the whole house."
He concluded by saying "please honorable members, Table Office will accordingly list the motion and this house will continue to deliberate and debate on it and take the final decision. I so rule"
In Summary, Honorable Adwoa Safo and the two others remain in their positions as MPs until the entire Parliament debates whether they should be removed and their seats declared vacant or should be allowed to continue as members of Parliament.
