The Electoral Commission is responsible for the organization of presidential and parliamentary elections in Ghana. Its current chair is Jean Mensah.
Before candidates for both presidential and parliamentary elections are allowed to stand for the elections, the EC vets and verifies their documents (which the candidates would submit to the EC) to ensure that indeed they are qualified, per the law, to be voted for.
In the case of Gyakye Quayson, the EC cleared him and allowed him to stand for the elections. This implies that the EC had done the necessary checks and determined that he was qualified to be voted for.
Today, 13 April, 2022, the Supreme Court has ruled by a 5-2 majority that Mr Quayson cannot hold himself as a lawmaker.
This ruling brings to mind the question, "if the Supreme Court finds something wrong with the candidacy of Mr Quayson, then did the EC do due diligence before approving him?"
If Mr Quayson is eventually booted from Parliament, then the EC must also be held responsible for their part in the fiasco.
