It’s been a year since the country lost the founder of her Fourth Republic. Jerry Rawlings first came into power as a military leader and ended his tenure as a civilian leader after winning 2 democratic elections. The nation was thus saddened when news broke out last year that he had passed on. It was a real shock because prior to this the former leader had buried his mum and was still in mourning. The nation honored Jerry Rawlings with a great state burial.
As today marks a year of his passing, there will be a remembrance service for him and John Mahama the 3-time presidential flagbearer of the NDC is expected to be around. In the studios of TV3 today, Friday, November 12, 2021, Joyce Bawa Mogtari shared insights into the life of Jerry Rawlings. According to her the place of Rawlings in the annals of history is Ghana can never be taken by anyone.
She passed the charisma and dynamism of the former president. She explained that various research in Ghana and Africa placed late Jerry Rawlings as one of the best leaders of the world. She called the laughter, and booms that Jerry Rawlings brought to Ghanaians and noted that the nation will forever remember him.
Joyce recalled the times that she met with Jerry Rawlings. She explained that the late president will just walk to him past John Mahama and just compliment her. She added that Jerry Rawlings loved to empower people especially women.
“Each time I was with John Mahama and we met him, he will just walk right up to me and compliment me or correct me on something that I said. He was always encouraging me when we met” Joyce said emotionally.
Jerry Rawlings is no more but his legacy and party will remain. His wife stood in the last elections and one of his daughters currently is the law maker for the Korle Klottey constituency. History will forever remember his life. He might have his dark sides as any human, but truth be told he has done his part of history and set important principles for future governments to follow.
